Convert JPG to AVIF

Turn JPG images into AVIF right in your browser. Batch conversion, adjustable quality, metadata removed by default, and no file ever leaves your device.

Convert to

If your browser can't encode AVIF itself, a 3.5 MB WebAssembly encoder is downloaded once. AVIF encoding is slower than JPG.

JPG

JPG is the most compatible image format: every phone, browser, editor and upload form accepts it.

JPG has no transparency; transparent areas are filled with a background colour you choose, white by default.

AVIF

AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. At the same quality it is usually smaller than both JPG and WebP.

Chrome, Firefox and Safari 16+ show AVIF, but many editors and upload forms don’t accept it yet.

How it works

  1. Your JPG files are decoded by the browser on this device and saved as AVIF. Photos keep their orientation.
  2. Drop many files at once and download them one by one or as a ZIP.
  3. Metadata such as GPS location is removed by default; switch it off to keep EXIF in JPG files.

Questions

Why does AVIF take longer?

Most browsers can’t encode AVIF themselves, so we download an AVIF encoder (about 3.5 MB of WebAssembly) on first use. Encoding is slower than JPG but files are much smaller.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Which licence do the codecs use?

The AVIF and WebP encoders are Apache-2.0 builds of libavif and libwebp. The HEIC decoder is libheif (LGPL-3.0), loaded as a separate file rather than built into our code.
